The news regarding the Moot Hall roof is rather grim and our Organ Recitals are cancelled for the foreseeable future.

Following the discovery that major repairs need to be undertaken to the roof/ceiling of the Moot Hall in March this year the City Council closed the Hall forthwith and all access is prohibited. The design for scaffolding to be erected inside the Hall has been completed and will be installed shortly. This will enable contractors to enter the hall safely and it is anticipated that the paintings and piano will be removed early in November and access gained to the organ, which has not been touched for nearly nine months. The organ builders, Harrison and Harrison, will be able to evaluate it then. We trust it will have borne its enforced silence well.

Experts will assess the scale of the repairs required too but we are sadly looking at the closure of the Moot Hall continuing throughout 2024, with no prospect of any recitals until early 2025.

We will publish news from time to time on this website but please contact Nigel Chapman, chair of The Friends of the Moot Hall if you require any information, by email or phone 01206 272908 nigelchapmanwine@btinternet.com
